NEW!!! ICNT 2011: Connecting People, Places and Stories: New strategies for conservation in a changing world

The theme of our next conference, which will take place in Victoria, Canada, from 12-16 October 2011 and hosted by our partners, The Land Conservancy of British Columbia and Heritage Canada Foundation, will be ‘Connecting People, Places and Stories: New strategies for conservation in a changing world’.

As the world undergoes a period of intense and unprecedented change, our relationship to our natural and cultural heritage is becoming increasingly significant as a foundation from which we can address those changes, and as a vehicle through which we can implement solutions.

Organisations, communities and individuals charged with caring for special places, stories and traditions around the globe must be ready to respond to these pressures with innovation – seeking new strategies and new models to take advantage of emerging trends and opportunities.

The 14th International Conference of National Trusts will focus on building connections and sharing experiences to help us meet these challenges. We will explore new approaches to the protection of special places as well as our more intangible heritage – our stories, traditions, languages and cultures. And we will seek new ways to better engage people and communities in this work. The Coast Salish people in British Columbia have a saying: ‘Hishuk-ish Tsawaak’. which means ‘Everything is connected’.  We will embrace this principle as we move forward to find solutions.

More information will be available shortly, but in the meantime do please contact the INTO Secretariat for further information.

Training programme: Heritage and culture – Challenge and innovation in public policy and practice

28 June – 2 July 2010

http://www.public-admin.co.uk/

The PAI ‘Heritage and culture: Challenge and innovation in public policy and practice’ programme introduces the basic principles behind heritage and cultural policy – what it is, why it is important, and how it can contribute to the economy and society as a whole.   It considers topics such as policy reform, cultural tourism development, funding strategies, community heritage and intangible heritage, site management, and sustainable development as well as innovative approaches to heritage and culture in the modern world.

The programme also looks at the often ignored role of innovation and leadership in the sphere of heritage and culture.

It is designed mainly for policy-makers and senior experts working in government ministries and agencies and in non-governmental organisations concerned with the promotion and funding of heritage conservation and culture.  Applications will also be welcome from those in the voluntary and private sector who wish to gain insights into the role of heritage and culture in economic development and to engage in dialogue with officials with responsibilities in this field.

This year in Austin, it will be even better, thanks to the ideas and feedback we’ve received this past year. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has made some significant changes to the conference format and content in Austin in order to provide an invigorating, challenging, and one-of-a-kind educational experience, including:

Two new general sessions on Thursday and Friday mornings, one focusing on preservation issues for the Next American City, the other for the Next American Landscape;

NEW session formats – more interactive and inspiring session formats such as:

  • Discussion sessions that expand on the two morning presentations;
  • Issues sessions that set up point, counterpoint ideas for discussion and debate;
  • Solutions sessions that ask participants to bring their issues and problems for on-the-spot critiques from experts;
  • How-To sessions that present step-by-step practical advice on important issues;
