RESOURCES
We are currently collecting documents from our member organisations which we hope will form an e-library of resources from the worldwide National Trust movement. In the meantime, do please contact INTO Secretariat for any information on a particular subject or start by watching some of our video advice.
Starting a National Trust … ?
INTO can help groups seeking transition to National Trust status, give guidance and advice on the legal and fiscal incentives that are beneficial to National Trusts, and provide documentation to assist with drafting new legislation and/or constitutions.
Our “Heritage Horizons” project aims to identify model National Trust legislation, heritage protection laws, planning policies and best practice guidelines from across the globe. Once this material is sourced it will be uploaded onto the INTO website. In the meantime, here is a small selection of legislation from our Founding Members:
Documents
A handbook written by Dr June Taboroff in 2002 (principally for use in Central and South America but very useful to any community contemplating the establishment of a national trust) describes the hallmarks of a heritage trust and their objectives, the different types of heritage trust, the establishment of a legal framework, structuring the organisation, developing a financing plan, education programmes, creating opportunities for volunteers, developing public/private partnerships, and what makes a successful heritage trust. Essential background reading! Heritage Trusts: Creating Opportunities for Public Participation in Cultural Conservation – A Handbook
A study in Catalan about the National Trust model as it functions in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the relevance/capacity of transplanting this format to Catalonia is available here.
A recent concept paper from the World Monuments Fund outlining the significant role played by cultural heritage in the economic development of communities in both developed and low-income countries: Preservation as a catalyst for change
A paper about Cultural Heritage and Natural Disasters: Incentives for Risk Management and Mitigation.
Looking for partners …?
Colleagues at the National Trust in England, inspired by the recent INTO-sponsored exchange between footpaths workers, would like to arrange something similar around the theme of Roman sites … If you have connections to a Roman site and would like to exchange experiences with heritage practitioners at Chedworth Roman Villa in the UK, please contact the INTO Secretariat.
Funding
We are happy to help our member organisations in their search for resources. Some current relevant funding streams are listed below but do please contact us for further information.
Advocacy documents
Strategies to conserve and protect our heritage need leadership and at the end of the Dublin Conference, INTO produced a declaration which set out ways in which national governments around the globe can promote heritage protection. The text of the ‘Dublin Declaration’ follows.
