INTO Director, Oliver Maurice, visits conservation groups in Taiwan
Oliver Maurice visited the Taiwan Environmental Information Association (for longer than anticipated given the air chaos!) from 9-21 April. He gave dozens of presentations and interviews, attended the AGM of TEIA, meetings with other ngos and government officials, attended a wedding (!) and visited a number of properties.
The trip was organised by TEIA as part of the groundwork being carried out before establishing a Taiwan National Trust for the natural heritage. It would not have been possible without the full costs being met by financial sponsorship and support in kind of a number of organisations.
The purpose of the visit was to support the TEIA in their endeavours: firstly to begin the process of founding a truly National Trust for Taiwan; to help with the launch of the Pink Dolphin Trust to save this endangered species from extinction; to act as an advocate to the people of Taiwan that environmental and cultural NGO’s do have a rôle to play in safeguarding their natural and cultural heritage; and to offer advice and support to various organisations dealing with heritage issues.
Read Oliver’s full report here and his (full!) programme.
Oliver also found the time to write a letter to the President of Taiwan about endangered costline.
The TEIA have translated 4 articles from their ‘Environmental Trust’ handbook, which give important background to the situation in Taiwan:
