INTACH’s Silver Jubilee
The Indian National Trust for Art and Culture (INTACH) is currently celebrating its Silver Jubilee Year with a series of events.
One of the major programs was a two-day international seminar on Endangered Languages in India held 22nd-23rd October at New Delhi. Linguists and other experts from India and overseas were of the view that when languages are passed on to the younger generation, specific knowledge of the ecosystem is also passed on. In the Indian context, English and Hindi have become “killer languages” resulting in the extinction of many languages. One of the reasons for disappearance of many languages in nearly every part of the world is due to ethno-linguistic groups either shifting from their original language to another that offers more power opportunities, or whose population gets so reduced that the language disappears.
India is a nation of great linguistic diversity where the widespread of English, recognized as the commercial and international language, has endangered many mother tongues. India tops the UNESCO list of countries where the maximum number of dialects are on the verge of extinction. One of the major recommendations to emerge from the Seminar is to set up an independent National Commission for Languages.
INTACH will conclude the Silver Jubilee Year on 27th January 2010 with an All-India Convenors’ Meet with representatives from 150 INTACH Chapters across India coming together at its Head Office in Delhi. Global Warming & Climate Change will be featured as the main topic for brain storming discussions. It has been argued that on a per capita basis, India ranks among the lowest in greenhouse gas emissions. However a National Mission has been set up by the Prime Minister to reduce carbon footprints; and efforts are being made to adhere to green norms codified by the Energy Resource Institute. INTACH aspires to put Climate Change on the front burner of all INTACH Chapter agendas during the year 2010.
